Is My Website Too Outdated?
A free diagnostic that tells you whether your website is past its use-by date — design, mobile, security, speed, content or platform — and what it’s costing you.
Answer a few questions and we’ll tell you whether your site is too outdated — and which parts are hurting you most.
When was your site last redesigned or meaningfully updated?
How to tell if your website is too outdated
A website ages faster than most business owners realise. A site that felt modern in 2019 can quietly read as "this business doesn’t really care" in 2026 — and that impression costs you enquiries you never knew you lost. For a small business anywhere in Australia, the question isn’t whether your site still "works" (it probably does); it’s whether it still helps you or quietly hurts you. The diagnostic above gives you a straight answer.
The six signs a site is past its use-by date
An outdated site isn’t just about looks. It’s a combination of design, device behaviour, security, speed, content freshness and the platform underneath — and any one of them can be quietly undermining your business.
- Dated design. A look that screams a specific era (early-2010s gradients, 90s patterns) signals a business that hasn’t moved with the times.
- Not mobile-friendly. More than half your visitors are on phones. A site that’s painful on mobile is, to most of your market, a broken site.
- No HTTPS / insecure. Browsers flag non-HTTPS sites as "not secure". That label alone drops trust and, for some, blocks the page entirely.
- Slow. A site that takes five seconds to load loses half its visitors before they see your hero. Speed is now a ranking factor too.
- Stale content. Old prices, last year’s hours, a copyright line that says 2021, services you no longer offer. Stale content tells visitors — and Google — the site is abandoned.
- Old platform. An unsupported CMS, a theme that hasn’t updated in years, a pile of plugins breaking each other. Old platforms are slow, insecure and hard to maintain.
What an outdated site actually costs you
It’s not a vanity problem. An outdated site costs you in three places. First, trust — a dated site makes a real business look like a side hustle, and trust is everything for a local business. Second, enquiries — visitors who don’t trust you don’t enquire, and a slow, broken-mobile, stale site drives them off. Third, search ranking — Google now downranks slow, non-secure, non-mobile sites, so an outdated site is quietly slipping down the results even if you used to rank. The cost is invisible but real: the enquiries you never received.
The quickest checks you can do yourself
Open your site on your phone. Does it look good and load fast? Does it have the padlock? Scroll to the footer — does the copyright say a year that’s long past, are the hours and prices current, is the team page accurate? If any of those are off, your site is telling people you’ve stopped paying attention. That’s the signal an outdated site sends, and it’s the one that costs you most.
When to refresh vs rebuild
Not every outdated site needs a full rebuild. A visual refresh — new design, kept content — can fix a dated look cheaply if the underlying platform is sound and the structure is fine. A restructure is needed when the content and pages no longer match what you offer. A rebuild is warranted when the platform itself is the problem — unsupported, insecure, or unmaintainable. The diagnostic helps you tell which you need; our redesign cost calculator helps you price it.
