Local readiness
0/100Local search is not one search
Someone in Fitzroy typing "emergency electrician" and someone typing "electrician Fitzroy" are at different stages. The first wants a phone number in ninety seconds. The second is comparing options. Your homepage can only be one thing, which is why a single page rarely ranks for both.
The businesses that dominate a suburb are not doing anything exotic. They have a complete profile, a handful of genuinely useful suburb pages, and a steady flow of reviews.
What Google is actually measuring
For local results, Google weighs three things: relevance, distance and prominence.
- Relevance — does your page clearly match the service and place? A page about "plumbing services" is less relevant to "blocked drain Richmond" than a page titled exactly that.
- Distance — you cannot change it, but you can widen your effective area with a verified service area and pages for the suburbs you genuinely cover.
- Prominence — reviews, citations, links and mentions. This is where most of the work is.
The suburb page that works
A suburb page is not your service page with the suburb name pasted in five times. It needs something real: the streets or landmarks you cover, how long you have worked there, typical jobs, travel time, a local review, and a phone number. Two hundred genuine words beat eight hundred templated ones.
Structure that performs: one page per service per suburb, a clear H1 with service and suburb, a short intro naming the area, a list of what is included, prices or ranges, two or three local proof points, an FAQ, and a form above the fold.
Reviews are the fastest lever
BrightLocal research consistently finds that most consumers read reviews before choosing a local business, and Google's own data says a complete profile makes people 70% more likely to visit. A business with 40 recent reviews and a complete profile will outrank a better-equipped competitor with 6 old ones.
Ask on the day you finish. Send a direct link. Reply to every review within a week, including the bad ones — a calm reply to a one-star review persuades more people than a perfect average.
An Australian reality check
Google's own research found 76% of people who search "near me" visit a business within a day. That is a very short window. If your hours are wrong or your phone number is buried, the searcher does not wait — they tap the next result. Local SEO is largely the work of not losing those moments.
What to do in order
Verify your Google Business Profile. Fix name, address and phone everywhere. Build one suburb page for your highest-value service. Ask ten customers for reviews. Add LocalBusiness schema. Then expand to the next suburb — one at a time, properly, rather than twenty thin pages at once.
Plan your pages above
The planner generates title, H1 and meta suggestions for your service and suburb, plus a local readiness score so you can see which foundation piece is missing before you write a word.
