Why Is My Bounce Rate So High?
A free diagnostic that finds the real reason your bounce rate is high — relevance, speed, mobile, content, UX or no next step — and what actually lowers it.
Answer a few questions and we’ll show the most likely reasons your bounce rate is high — and what actually lowers it.
Where do most visitors land?
A high bounce rate isn’t always a problem — but often is
Seeing a bounce rate of 70% or 80% in your analytics is alarming, and for most small businesses in Australia it genuinely points at a real problem. The diagnostic above helps you figure out whether your bounce rate is the harmless kind or the kind that’s quietly costing you enquiries, and — if it’s the latter — which of the usual causes is to blame.
First, what "bounce rate" actually means
A bounce is a visit where someone viewed one page and left without going to another. A high rate can be fine — if someone searches your phone number, finds it on your contact page, and calls, that’s a "bounce" but a great outcome. So before panicking, ask: is the bounce happening on a page that should lead somewhere (your homepage, a service page), and is it accompanied by no enquiries? If yes, it’s a problem worth fixing. The diagnostic focuses on the pages where bounce actually matters.
The six things that actually drive bounce up
- Wrong landing page. Visitors arrive somewhere that doesn’t match what they searched or expected, so they leave instantly.
- Slow load. People won’t wait. A page that takes more than 3 seconds loses a large share of visitors before they even see it.
- Broken mobile. On a phone, a layout that’s hard to read or tap sends people away fast.
- Weak first impression. The hero doesn’t reassure the visitor they’re in the right place, so they bounce.
- No next step. There’s nowhere obvious to go, so the visit ends where it began.
- Wall of text. Dense, unscannable content that doesn’t answer the question makes people leave for a page that does.
The fix that lowers bounce most
The single biggest lever is relevance of the landing page. If someone searches "emergency electrician Adelaide" and lands on a generic homepage that never mentions Adelaide or emergencies, they bounce — not because your site is bad, but because that page isn’t what they wanted. Matching your landing pages to the real searches (and ads, and social posts) that send you traffic is the highest-impact fix. After that, speed and a clear next step do most of the rest.
What won’t help (but feels like it should)
A few "fixes" people try that rarely move bounce rate: adding more stock photos, writing longer pages, or adding pop-ups. None of these address relevance, speed or a clear next step — the things that actually drive bounce. Pop-ups, in particular, often increase bounce by frustrating visitors. Focus on the landing page matching intent, loading fast, and offering one obvious next step.
Turn the visitors you keep into enquiries
Lowering bounce keeps more of the visitors you worked for; the next job is turning them into enquiries. A page that loads fast, immediately says "yes, this is what you were looking for", and offers one clear call to action does both at once.
