Hidden Costs of Website Builders (Renewals, Add-ons, Transaction Fees)
The $12 a month plan does not stay $12. Here is where builder costs actually come from — and a calculator that shows your true three-year total.
True cost calculator
Include renewals, apps and transaction fees, then look at three years.
Monthly online revenue
$3,000Year one
$708
Each year after
$1,020
Three-year total
$2,748
True monthly cost: $76
By comparison, a $4,500 custom build with $40/month hosting is about $5,940 over three years.
In this case the builder is cheaper over three years — provided you do not have to rebuild in year two for functionality.

Get a custom quote →The number on the pricing page is the smallest number
Website builders advertise a monthly price that is real, but rarely the whole story. The plan you need is usually one tier above the one advertised, the price is promotional, and the features you assumed were included are add-ons.
None of that makes builders bad. It makes the comparison harder than the pricing page suggests.
Where the money actually goes
- The renewal jump. Introductory pricing typically applies to the first term only. Year two often costs considerably more — sometimes close to double. Always find the renewal price before you commit.
- The plan you actually need. The cheapest tier usually removes something essential: your own domain, e-commerce, removing the builder's badge, or enough storage.
- Apps and add-ons. Booking, forms, multilingual, SEO tools, email marketing. Individually $5–$30 a month; a normal stack adds up fast.
- Transaction fees. Shops often pay a percentage on top of the payment gateway fee, unless they use the platform's own payments. That is a real cost that scales with revenue, not a fixed one.
- Storage and bandwidth caps. Hit the limit and you either delete photos or upgrade a tier.
- Email. Business email is nearly always extra. Budget $8–$12 per user per month.
- Lock-in. You rent the site, not the code. Moving platforms later means rebuilding, which is the most expensive hidden cost of all.
A worked example
A small store on a $29/month plan. Year one: $348. Then the renewal goes to $55 a month — $660 a year. Two apps at $15 each add $360 a year. Payment fees at 2% on $60,000 of revenue add $1,200. Three-year total: roughly $5,000, on a plan advertised at $29.
That is not a scam. It is a business model. But if you compare it against a $4,500 custom build with $40 a month hosting, the numbers look very different from how they looked on the pricing page.
What to ask before you sign up
What is the renewal price? Which tier includes my own domain and removes the badge? What do I pay per transaction? What is the storage limit? Can I export my content? If I leave, do I keep the site?
When a builder is still the right answer
If you need a five-page brochure site this week and have almost no budget, a builder is a rational choice. Just go in knowing the three-year number and the rebuild you will probably do later.
Use the calculator above
Enter the introductory price, the renewal price, your apps, your transaction rate and your monthly revenue. It shows year one, year two, and the true three-year total, so you can compare it honestly against a custom build.

Costs and compliance are squeezing Australian small business

Online is where the money is moving
The Australian Financial Review reported a record $62.3 billion spent online in a year, expected to double within five years — which is why what you spend on your website should be judged on the business it brings in.

How to apply this to your business
- 1Use the estimate to sense-check any quote you receive.
- 2Compare like for like — pages, design level and features, not just the headline price.
- 3Remember the ongoing costs (hosting, care), not just the build.
- 4Ask what is included — copywriting, SEO setup and testing are often the difference.
