Website Design for a Small Law Firm in Australia

A small law firm's site has to earn trust, not show off

A small law practice doesn't need the kind of site a top-tier firm has — glossy, sprawling, built to impress other lawyers. It needs the opposite: a site that makes a stressed, uncertain person feel they've found the right help. People don't hire lawyers they're impressed by; they hire lawyers they trust. And trust, on a website, comes from clarity and proof, not from polish.

Here's what a small law firm site actually needs, and what to leave out.

Make the practice areas obvious and specific

The first thing a visitor wants to know is "do you handle my kind of problem?" A homepage that says "experienced legal services" answers nothing. A homepage that says "family law, wills and estates, small business disputes" tells them in two seconds. List your practice areas plainly, and give each one its own page if there's enough to say — because people search for the specific thing ("divorce lawyer [suburb]", "contested will [suburb]"), not for "lawyer". The specificity is the SEO and the conversion in one.

Proof you've done this before

A small firm can't lean on a century of reputation, so it leans on evidence. Case results (in general terms, respecting confidentiality), client testimonials, and the credentials of the principal. Not invented awards — real things. A paragraph on the principal's background and why they started the firm does more than a wall of logos. This is the part that converts a "maybe" into a call, and it's where most small firm sites are thinnest.

Make it easy to start the conversation

People looking for a lawyer are often in the middle of something difficult. Make the first step as low-friction as possible — a phone number that's obvious, a short form, and a clear statement of what the first consult looks like ("first 15 minutes free", "fixed-fee initial advice", whatever your model is). Burying contact behind a "request appointment" wall loses the people who were ready to call. (More on friction: how to get more leads from your website.)

Local search is how small firms get found

People search for lawyers by area and speciality. "Family lawyer [suburb]", "estate lawyer [suburb]". The firms that show up are the ones with sites structured for it — clear practice-area pages, location pages, and content that answers the questions people actually search. A small firm that does this well outranks bigger firms that don't. We wrote the diagnosis: why your website isn't getting any customers.

The pages a small firm needs

A homepage with your practice areas and a clear way to contact. A page per practice area — this is the SEO work and the conversion work. An about page for the principal. A contact page with hours, phone, and a short form. That's the spine. You don't need a blog, though a few plain-language articles on common questions ("what to expect in a property settlement") build trust and search over time. (How many pages: how many pages a small business website should have.)

What to skip

Stock photos of gavels and scales of justice (every law site has them, they mean nothing). Dense walls of legal text nobody reads. "Awards" from bodies nobody's heard of. Anything that makes the site feel impersonal — a small firm's advantage is that it's personal, and the site should reflect that.

What it costs

A proper small-firm site — clear, proof-led, structured for local search — sits below what most practices assume. The numbers: how much a website costs. For a practice, it pays for itself in a handful of new clients.
