Website Design for an Import Export or Wholesale Business

A wholesale site has two audiences who want opposite things

An import-export or wholesale website serves two very different visitors. Trade buyers want to see your product range, minimums, pricing, and how to open an account — fast, in a catalogue they can actually use. End consumers (if you sell direct too) want to buy one thing, now. Most wholesale sites fail by trying to serve both with the same page, which serves neither. The good ones separate them clearly.

Here's how to structure a wholesale site that works.

A trade portal and a retail store, separate

If you sell both trade and retail, don't make a trade buyer wade through a consumer checkout, and don't make a consumer face minimum-order quantities. Have a clear "trade login" or "open a trade account" path for wholesale buyers, and a straightforward shop for retail. The single biggest mistake on wholesale sites is mixing the two and losing both. (We wrote a related point on audience clarity here: what to include on your homepage.)

The catalogue has to be usable

For trade buyers, the product catalogue is the whole site. It needs to load fast, be searchable, show clear specs and minimums, and have pricing (or a clear "login for trade pricing"). A PDF catalogue that won't open on a phone, or a catalogue with no specs, loses the buyer to the next supplier. This is the part that earns the business, and it's where most wholesale sites are weakest.

Make opening an account easy

Trade buyers expect to apply for an account — ABN, business details, references. Make this an obvious, short form, not a buried email address. The friction of "email us to enquire" quietly loses buyers who'd happily fill in a form. (More on friction: how to get more leads from your website.)

Show you're real and reliable

Wholesale is a trust business — trade buyers are committing to a supplier relationship. Show that you're established: how long you've been operating, the brands or categories you carry, your warehouse location, your shipping areas. A site that looks like it could be a one-person operation from a bedroom doesn't win trade accounts. Real photos of your warehouse, your stock, your team. This is the proof that converts.

Search matters, but differently

Wholesale buyers search by product and category ("wholesale [product] Australia", "[brand] distributor"). The SEO work is about product and category pages, structured clearly, with the right terms. This is less about suburb and more about product. We wrote the broader playbook: why your website isn't getting any customers.

The pages a wholesale site needs

A homepage that says who you are, what you supply, and who you serve (trade/retail). A product catalogue, well-structured. A trade-account page. An about page showing you're established. A contact page with warehouse location and shipping areas. That's the spine. (How many pages: how many pages a small business website should have.)

What to skip

A single mixed shop that serves no one well. A PDF catalogue. Stock photos of shipping containers. Vague "quality products at competitive prices" copy. A wholesale site should be fast, clear, and make it obvious how to buy from you.

What it costs

A proper wholesale site — clear catalogue, trade/retail separation, structured for search — sits below what most operators assume. The numbers: how much a website costs.
