How to Get More Leads From My Website

Usually it's a conversion problem, not a traffic problem. Here's the order that actually works, step by step.

How to Get More Leads From My Website

More leads isn't about more traffic — usually

The first thing most owners think when they want more leads is "I need more visitors". Often they don't. Plenty of sites have decent traffic and almost no enquiries, because the traffic isn't the problem — the conversion is. Before you spend a cent on getting more people to a site that doesn't convert them, fix the site. Here's the order that actually works.

Step one: be obvious about what you do and where

The single biggest lead-killer on small business sites is vagueness. A visitor lands and can't tell, in five seconds, what the business does or whether it serves their area. They leave. You'd be surprised how many sites lose leads here, at the very first sentence. Fix the top of your homepage: one plain sentence on what you do, one on where. This alone moves the needle, and it's free. (We wrote the homepage version here: what to include on your homepage.)

Step two: make contacting you frictionless

If a visitor has to scroll to the bottom, hunt for a contact page, and fill out a ten-field form to reach you, most won't. Put your phone number and a short form visible without scrolling. Cut the form to the fields you actually need — name, contact, what they want. Every extra field costs you enquiries. This is conversion mechanics, and it's where most of the easy wins live.

Step three: add proof

People don't enquire with businesses they don't trust, and on a site, trust comes from evidence. A few real reviews, a couple of recent jobs, the names or logos of people you've worked with. Not stock photos, not invented testimonials — real ones. This is the part that turns a "maybe" into an enquiry, and it's the part most under-invested in.

Step four: fix mobile, properly

Most of your visitors are on a phone, and most small business sites are mildly broken on mobile — text too small, buttons too close, forms that don't quite work. A clunky mobile site loses people in two taps. Test yours on an actual phone, not just your laptop. If it's awkward to use, it's losing you leads you already paid to bring there.

Step five: make sure people arrive in the first place

Only once the above is solid does more traffic help. And the cheapest traffic is search — people who are already looking for what you do. That's an SEO conversation, and it's the difference between a site that gets found and one that doesn't. If yours is invisible, the diagnosis is here: why your website isn't getting any customers. And if you want the cost side of that work: how much SEO costs.

The order matters

The mistake is doing these in reverse — pouring money into ads or SEO to drive traffic to a site that doesn't convert. You end up paying twice: for the traffic, and for the leads it didn't turn. Fix conversion first, then amplify traffic. The businesses whose sites bring in a steady stream of leads are the ones who got the order right.
