How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business Website?

It's a bundle of very different things — some you need, some you don't. Here's how to tell, and what the real numbers are.

How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business Website?

SEO isn't one service, so it doesn't have one price

"How much does SEO cost" is a question that gets answered badly because it gets treated like buying a thing. SEO isn't a thing — it's a bundle of very different activities, some one-off, some ongoing, some of which a small business needs and some of which it absolutely doesn't. So the price depends entirely on which bundle you're buying, and a lot of what gets sold as "SEO" to small businesses is the part they need least.

Let's separate the real from the sold.

The part that should be free: on-page SEO

This is the work of making your site understandable to Google and useful to the people who land on it — page titles, structure, content written around what your customers actually search, local signals like your area and hours. It's not a monthly service; it's part of building the site properly in the first place. If you're being charged a monthly fee for "on-page SEO" years after your site launched and nothing's changing, ask what's actually being done. We include this in the build, because a site without it is a site that doesn't get found, and there's no point charging you twice for the same job. (More on why it matters: why your website isn't getting customers.)

The part that's genuinely ongoing: content

If you want to grow your search traffic over time, the lever that actually moves is useful content — pages and articles that answer the questions your customers search. This is real, ongoing work, and it's where a monthly SEO retainer can be worth it. But it's worth it only if the content is good and specific to your business, not generic filler. A retainer that produces four generic posts a month is lighting money on fire. A retainer that produces two genuinely useful articles a month is usually worth it.

The part that's mostly sold to people who don't need it

Link building, technical SEO audits, schema markup, Core Web Vitals optimisation — these are real disciplines, and they matter for some businesses. For most small, local businesses, they're a small fraction of the picture; the bulk of whether you show up in local search is decided by the on-page work and the content. If a quote is heavy on the technical jargon and light on "what will we actually write", be sceptical.

The actual numbers

For a small local business, a fair setup — proper on-page SEO built into a site — should be part of the site cost, not a separate five-figure fee. An ongoing content retainer that's worth it sits somewhere around $300 to $800 a month, depending on how much content and how competitive your area is. Above that, for a typical local business, you're increasingly paying for reporting overhead rather than results. Below that, you're usually buying a few hours of someone's time and not much actual work. We've seen the full spectrum, and the honest version is that good SEO for a small business costs less than most owners fear and more than the "$99 a month" ads.

If you want the site-cost side of that picture, it's here: how much a website costs.

The test that saves you money

Before you pay anyone a monthly retainer, ask what you'll actually get each month, in plain terms. If the answer is "reports" and "optimisation" with no specifics, that's a warning. If the answer is "two articles like this and these page updates", that's someone doing real work. The single best way to avoid wasting money on SEO is to start with a site that's built to be found in the first place — and the cheapest way to see what that looks like is a free mockup.
