How Much Does a Website Cost for a Small Business in Australia?

An honest breakdown of DIY, freelancer and agency pricing in Australia — and the yearly costs everyone forgets to mention.

How Much Does a Website Cost for a Small Business in Australia?

What you're actually paying for

A website isn't one product with one price. It's a bundle of decisions, and the cost moves with each one. Before any numbers, it helps to know the parts: design, build, content, domain, hosting, and ongoing maintenance. Some of those are one-off, some are yearly, and the mistake I see most often is owners pricing only the one-off and forgetting the recurring.

The other thing that shifts price dramatically is who does it. The same site costs very different amounts depending on whether you build it yourself on a platform, hire a freelancer, or go to an agency. They're not the same service, and pretending they are is how people end up either overspending or underwhelmed.

The DIY platform route

Wix, Squarespace and the rest will quote you something like $20 to $50 a month. That looks cheap, and on paper it is. What it doesn't include is your time. Building it yourself means writing every page, sizing every image, fixing the mobile layout when it breaks, and learning enough about SEO to not end up invisible. For a lot of owners that's 20 to 40 hours they don't have, and the result is usually a site that's "fine".

Fine is okay for some businesses. It's not okay if the whole point of the site is to bring in new customers, because a generic template with no SEO work behind it tends to bring in none. We wrote about this trade-off in website builder versus hiring a designer.

The freelancer route

A local freelancer might quote anywhere from $800 to $3,000 for a small site. The variance is huge because freelancers vary hugely — some are brilliant recent grads, some are someone who's done three sites. You're paying less than an agency but you're also taking on more of the risk, and you become the project manager. If they disappear halfway through, you're the one left calling around.

This can be the right call if you find someone good and you're willing to manage them. The cost is real, just not always in dollars.

The traditional agency route

A traditional Australian agency will commonly quote $3,000 to $10,000 and up for a small business site, sometimes much more. You're paying for a team, for process, for account management, and for a level of polish. For a small business that just needs enquiries coming in, that's often more than the situation warrants — and it's the gap we built DSK to fill.

The honest version: a lot of what you pay a big agency for, a small business doesn't use. You don't need a brand strategy workshop to take bookings for a lawn-mowing round.

What we charge, and why

We sit below the traditional agency number because we use modern AI tooling to do the heavy lifting quickly, then layer our own design and SEO judgement on top. You get the craft without the agency tax. The exact figure depends on what you need, and we always agree it before you commit — nothing is hidden. If you want to compare against what a designer should cost in 2026, that's here: how much you should pay a web designer.

The costs people forget

Domain: around $15 to $50 a year for a .com.au. Hosting: somewhere between nothing and $30 a month depending on who's running it. Maintenance and updates: free if you do it yourself, an ongoing fee if someone else does. SSL is free in most setups now. None of these are big individually; together they're the difference between the sticker price and the real price.

The thing I'd watch for is the "cheap build, expensive upkeep" pattern — a site built for almost nothing that then costs you $100+ a month forever, or that breaks every time the platform updates. We've taken over plenty of those.

So what will it cost you?

For a typical Australian small business that wants a proper, search-friendly site that brings in enquiries, a realistic all-in figure is lower than most owners fear and higher than the $20-a-month advert.
