How Long Does It Take to Build a Small Business Website?

Between three days and four weeks — here's what actually drives the timeline, and how to keep yours fast.

How Long Does It Take to Build a Small Business Website?

The honest version first

A proper small business website takes somewhere between three days and four weeks, and the reason that range is so wide is that "build a website" means very different things depending on who's doing it and what's already ready. A one-page site with your existing wording, built by someone who does this daily, can be up in days. A five-page site with new copy, original photos, and proper SEO can take a few weeks. Both are normal; neither is a sign something's wrong.

So the better question isn't "how long does it take" but "how long should mine take, given what I need". Let's break that down.

The phases, and where the time actually goes

Every site moves through the same stages: a brief, a structure, a design, a build, content, and a launch. The brief is quick — an hour or two if you know your business. Structure is quick — a couple of hours. The design and build are where a chunk of time goes, but with modern tooling that's faster than it used to be. The single biggest time-sink, almost always, is content. Writing the words. Sourcing or taking the photos. Deciding what to say on the homepage. This is the part owners underestimate and the part that quietly stretches timelines.

If your content is ready — your wording, your images, your service list — the build is fast. If you're starting from nothing, the build waits on you, and that's where projects stall.

The DIY timeline

Building it yourself on Wix or Squarespace, the platform will tell you "a weekend". It's rarely a weekend. A workable version usually takes 20 to 40 hours of actual focused work, spread over a couple of weeks because nobody has a free weekend to give it. That's the time it takes to write the pages, get the layout not to look generic, fix mobile, and set up the basics. A polished version takes longer. (We compared this route to hiring someone in builder vs designer.)

The freelancer timeline

A freelancer building a small site typically quotes one to three weeks, assuming you respond promptly. Real-world timelines usually run longer because of back-and-forth: you reviewing, them revising, you sourcing photos you said you'd send. Two to four weeks is a realistic expectation from kickoff to live, with most of the variability on your side, not theirs.

The agency timeline

A traditional agency on a small business site often quotes four to eight weeks, sometimes more. Some of that is genuine work; some of it is process overhead — sign-offs, account management, scheduling around other clients. For a small business that just needs to be live, that's usually longer than the situation warrants.

How long we take

Our free mockup usually lands in one to three business days from when we have your details. From there, if you decide to go ahead, the full site is typically live within a week or two, depending on how quickly you can get us the content and how many pages you need. The reason it's faster than the old agency model is that we use AI tooling for the heavy build work and keep the human time for the decisions that actually need a person. You're not waiting on a junior to free up.

How to keep yours fast

Three things make a site ship quickly, and they're all on your side. Have your wording ready — even rough bullet points beat a blank page. Have your logo and a few real photos. And respond to the one or two questions your designer will inevitably have. Sites that take forever almost always stall on content, not on build. Sites that move fast almost always have an owner who's decisive about what they want.

If you want to see how fast yours could be ready, the quickest way to find out is a free mockup — pick a style below, send us your details, and we'll have something real in front of you in days.
