AI vs WordPress and other website builders: what we actually tested
Many people think AI-built sites can't match WordPress for SEO. We tested almost every platform ourselves — here's what the real Google Search Console data shows.

There's a belief that just won't go away: "AI-built websites can't rank. If you want SEO, you need WordPress." It sounds sensible. WordPress has been the SEO king for a decade — plugins, control, the works. AI site builders are new, so surely they can't compete?
We didn't want to take that on faith. So we tested it. We've built on almost every platform out there — WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, GoDaddy Website Builder, custom-coded sites, and now modern AI builders. Here's what we actually found, with the real Google Search Console data to back it up.
Test 1: GoDaddy Website Builder vs an AI-built site
One of our clients came to us after building their own site with GoDaddy's website builder. On paper, it had SEO tools — you could set page titles and meta descriptions and all the usual bits. But in practice? The site was getting essentially zero impressions. It existed, Google just didn't care.
We moved them onto an AI-built platform and did the basic SEO work properly — real content, proper structure, the fundamentals that actually move the needle. The result: traffic improved by roughly 10x. Not from some secret hack. Just from doing the basics right on a platform that lets you do them right.
Test 2: Our own WordPress site
To be fair to WordPress, we run a WordPress site of our own, and it does get strong traffic — you can see it below, 1.32M impressions and over 4,500 clicks. So yes, WordPress works. We're not arguing it doesn't.
But here's the context people miss: that site has been live for years and has over 500 pages of content. It took a long time and a lot of writing to build that footprint. The point of this test isn't "AI beats WordPress" — it's that a well-built AI site can reach a similar trajectory in a fraction of the time, if the content is genuinely well-written, SEO-optimised, and offers a unique perspective to readers instead of just summarising what everyone else has already said online. That last part is the whole ballgame. Google rewards value, not word count.
Test 3 & 4: Two AI-built sites we launched this year
These are the ones that really answer the question. Both sites below were built with an AI platform and launched earlier this year — they're only a few months old. New domains, no history, no backlink campaigns.
The first one is already pulling in around 600 organic clicks a month, with impressions climbing steadily:
The second is a little earlier in its journey, but you can see the same pattern — a quiet start, then a sharp uptick as the content and SEO foundations start to compound:
So, can AI sites rank?
The data answers the question for us. AI-built sites can absolutely rank — and rank quickly — when they're built and optimised the right way. The platform matters far less than most people think; the content, the structure, and the SEO fundamentals matter far more.
That's exactly how we build for our clients: AI tools to move fast and keep cost down, with real design and SEO experience layered on top so the site actually gets found and converts. You don't need WordPress, and you don't need a massive agency bill. You just need it done properly.
