AI vs WordPress (and every other website builder): what we actually tested
We built on WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, GoDaddy, custom code, and AI. Here's what we actually found — including the one big SEO myth that isn't true.

We built on all of them. Here's what actually happened.
I'm going to save you the trial and error. Over the last couple of years our team has built sites on WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, GoDaddy's website builder, fully custom code, and now AI-assisted builds. Not as a demo — as real sites for real small businesses in Australia, the kind that have to show up on Google and turn visitors into enquiries. The short version: every platform has a job it's good at, and one big lie it tells. Here's what we found.
The platforms, honestly
WordPress is the one everyone's heard of. It can do almost anything, which is also its problem — it can do almost anything, which means you spend half your life maintaining plugins that update and break each other. SEO is excellent if you know what you're doing, and a mess if you don't. It's not cheap once you add hosting, a decent theme, the plugins, and someone to keep it from breaking.
Squarespace is beautiful out of the box and genuinely easy. Its SEO is better than its reputation, but it's a closed box — you're on their design system, and if you want something specific, you hit a wall. Fine for a simple site, frustrating for anything ambitious.
Wix has improved a lot. The drag-and-drop freedom is real, but that freedom also produces messy, slow sites if you're not disciplined. Its SEO is workable now, not great.
GoDaddy Website Builder is fast to set up and that's the nicest thing I can say. The designs feel generic, the SEO options are limited, and you're locked into their ecosystem. We rarely recommend it.
Fully custom code gives you exactly what you want and costs accordingly. For a small business, it's almost always overkill — you're paying for flexibility you won't use.
AI-assisted builds — the approach we use now — is the one that surprised us. Done badly, you get the generic "AI site" everyone mocks. Done well, with real business content and a human steering it, you get a custom-quality site at a fraction of the cost and time.

Whatever the result, we can build you a site that’s genuinely yours.
The SEO myth — and why it's wrong
Here's the thing people say that we tested and found to be false: "AI sites can't rank on Google." The logic is that Google penalises AI content, so an AI-built site is doomed. In practice, Google ranks what's useful — fast pages, clear structure, content that actually answers what people search, a site that works on mobile. None of that is the exclusive domain of WordPress. In fact, the clean, fast, well-structured sites we now build outperform the bloated WordPress sites we used to build, because there's less to break and the pages load in a second.
What Google actually penalises is thin, generic, copy-pasted content — which is a content problem, not a platform problem. A site with real business specifics, in the words your customers actually search, structured properly, will rank. We've watched our AI-assisted sites climb past WordPress competitors for local terms. The platform didn't decide it; the content and structure did.
What it really costs
The other myth is that WordPress is the cheap option. It isn't. Once you've paid for hosting, a theme worth using, the plugins, the security, the backups, and someone to update it all (because if you don't, it breaks or gets hacked), you're well past what a done-for-you build costs. The "free" part of WordPress is the part that costs you the most over a year. Use the calculator below to see what your build should actually cost in Australia — whatever you build on.

Every platform can hold content. Almost none of the small businesses we talk to have planned what content they'll actually make, or whether it'll pay for itself. Content is what makes SEO work — without it, you have a nice site no one finds. Here's how to tell if it's worth it for you.
Launching without a checklist is how sites ship broken
We've seen beautiful sites go live with contact forms that don't send, missing SSL, no redirects from the old site, analytics not firing. Half the value of a build is launching it properly. Run through this before you ship.

0/6Do you even need a website?
Honest answer: most local businesses do, but not all, and not for the reason they think. If you're fully booked from referrals, you might not need one yet. If you want to grow beyond who you already know, show up on Google, or sell online, you do. Take the quiz — it'll tell you, based on your actual situation.

What we'd actually recommend
For a small business in Australia that wants a site that looks custom, ranks locally, and doesn't become a maintenance burden: skip WordPress unless you enjoy it, skip the cheap builders unless your standards are low, and use a build that's done for you. The platform matters less than the content, the structure, and whoever's actually responsible for it working.
That's what we do. Pick a style below, tell us about your business, and we'll build you a free mockup — no payment, no obligation. You'll see what a site built around your actual business looks like, and then you decide.
